Baldy Town is a now-abandoned, formerly bustling town located at the base of Baldy Mountain.
Baldy Town, which served as the base of gold mining operations on the mountain, figured prominently in Old West culture and folklore, but was completely abandoned when mining in the area ceased.
Location and geography[]
Among its ruins, at an elevation of 10,000 feet, Philmont now runs a staffed camp and commissary, which includes a trading post and showers.
History[]
In 1963, this area was purchased through the generosity of Norton Clapp, vice-president of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America and added to the Philmont Scout Ranch. This added 10,098 acres (41 km²) to the property which had been donated to the Boy Scouts of America by oil magnate Waite Phillips.
Program[]
Baldy Town offers gold panning in the Ute Creek which runs to the west of the cabin, as well as a small museum containing artifacts left from the town's mining days. Baldy Town also serves as one of the primary camps for crews summiting the nearby Baldy Mountain. As of 2024, crews departing Baldy Town for the summit must do so by 8:00AM.
